Build
A poem
It takes four years to finish medical school
and three years to finish law school
and one master’s degree to become a teacher;
it took fourteen years to build
the Brooklyn Bridge and
it took seven years to write
the musical Hamilton and
it took four years to paint
the Sistine Chapel —
and it’s easy to think in our age of
instant gratification and
instant grocery delivery and
online shopping and degrees and zooms,
that we should have what we want when we want it,
because life seems to be at our fingertips;
but the constant truth that hasn’t wavered
is that most things that are
magnificent
and most things that are
awe-inspiring
and most things that are
worth having
take a bit of time —
so when you feel as if you’re life is
not where you want it to be, and
your job is not where you want it to be, and
your love is not where you want it to be —
I hope you take a step back,
and figure out
where it is you want to grow
and how it is you want to build.
