For The Ones Who Aren’t Good At Small Talk
It’s ok that you don’t want to talk about the weather
You can’t be bothered to talk about the weather.
You don’t care to discuss your morning commute, or a sports game, or the latest fashion trend.
You like to dig deep into what makes a person tick. You want to know about what they think about religion, and politics, and love, and marriage. You want to hear about their health, and what keeps them up late at night. You want to know all of the stories about their children — not just the pretty pictures they post on social media.
You, dear friend, are someone who isn’t good at small talk.
It’s not that you cannot do it — anyone can talk about the weather or things of mundane nature. It’s that you don’t want to. It’s that your insides recoil when you do so. It’s that you start to twitch when you’re at a party, and you feel the blaze, dull nature of small talk pushing you into a corner.
You want to talk about the messy parts of life.
You want to talk about the bits that make a human the person that they are — what they like, what they don’t.
What they hate and what they love.
What lights their heart on fire and what makes them want to run in a corner and hide. You want to know the pieces of their soul that are both light and dark.
You don’t care if it’s the first time you’ve met, or if it’s the twentieth — you’d much rather sit down with whomever you’re talking to, and hear about every nitty-gritty idea that’s going on in their head over topics that are “safe.”
You want to discuss things.
You want to listen to what they have to say — you want to learn things, too.
You aren’t one for small talk — and you know what? That’s ok.
The world needs more people who want to see through the filters and the facades.
The heartbeat of humanity beats with the desire to be heard, to be seen, and to be loved — and the world needs more people who want to cut through the muck and know the heart of a human.
The world needs more humans who are unafraid of speaking and listening to the truth and staying and sitting through uncomfortable moments in life.
The world needs more humans who are unafraid of talking about what’s on our hearts.
The world needs more humans like you.
