If You Count Your Scars

If you count your scars, you’ll find a roadmap of the places you once stood: the stages where you found your voice, the clubs where your heart broke, the hours you spent walking alone on cobblestone streets,

looking for a sign that everything would be fine, that you were headed in the right direction, that you could find your way back, or through, or to wherever you were supposed to go.

And as you trace the wounds from each heartache and disappointment and blow to your spirit, perhaps you’ll see that the latticework of your history thus far has made you into something extraordinary.

So you’ll kiss the scars that have brought you to this time and place, remembering how it felt to be so raw, so broken, to be so without hope and air and light, and give thanks that you have found a way through the muck, out of the dark, and into something different, something new, something that is still, and always has been, you.
