One of my favorite Christmas lights displays in NYC is not / Rockefeller center / or Macy’s infamous windows / or the show at Sak’s Fifth Avenue / but a tiny, simple display of holiday magic on 55th street between 8th and 9th avenue / It’s there that tons of white Christmas lights hang from the trees that line the block / like bits of sparkle / or glitter / or confetti / As if Santa’s elves themselves have come down from the North Pole to give the neighborhood a bit of cheer / As if New York herself is reminding us to slow down and / pay attention to the lights of the season / wherever you might find them / For it’s easy to get swept up in / the hustle and bustle / of it all / to listen to the sales / to get more wrapped up in gifts than the people whom you’re wrapping them for / and to forget what this time is supposed to be about / Sometimes we need to remember to / stop and soak in the beauty of the light.
